A Waterside Retreat

· Domestic, Planting, Water features

Koi pond and Cedar Viewing deck in rural Hertfordshire

“It’s difficult to beat the beauty and tranquility of a pond and waterfall in your own garden.  The addition of water brings movement and a calming effect to your outdoor space and attracts a host of fascinating wildlife too.”

The garden design brief

This Hertfordshire garden design was driven by the owners’ desire to keep Koi fish as a hobby and add interest to their large but ‘empty’ garden.  Set next to beautiful parkland with a view of the golf course, the design needed a natural approach to blend with the surroundings.

The approach

A large, deep pond was excavated and retained with a dry stone walling to create a dramatic waterfall at one end and a pebble beach to encourage wildlife at the other.  The secret to a successful waterfall is choice of materials and correct calculation of the pump capacity required to achieve a natural flow of water.

Pond construction materials and planting style

The owners wanted a tranquil place to enjoy the fish so a cedar viewing deck overhanging the pond seemed the natural choice.  It gives the illusion of water running underneath and a relaxed feeling reminiscent of a favourite lakeside holiday. To link this waterside retreat to the house the water starts from a smaller natural rock water feature by the patio and conservatory.

A slight fall away from the house enables a soft ‘S’ shaped rill defined with granite setts to lead the eye to the main pond.  Water flowing over Scottish cobbles adds the gentle sound of running water.

We created a natural planting style, with billowing grasses lining the stream and waterside then woodland planting making the smooth transition from garden to landscape beyond.

The result

The new design, enhanced with atmospheric lighting, has given the owners a real reason to spend more time outside soaking up the atmosphere of their peaceful waterside retreat.
