Butterfly Farm, Bedford· Commercial, Planting, Water features
Award winning design
Overall winner: APL Award for Commercial Design and Build, 1999
“This public feature was constructed from design to be a magical entertainment for children, educational at heart.”
To create a micro world to exhibit the butterfly’s in their natural environment and to give the public the wow factor.
The essence of the project was the butterfly’s, the use of plants, water, and natural food. From a virtually flat site we went about construction of waterfalls and streams across the whole landscape.
The garden construction materials
Many tons of the local rocks were used in the creation of the landscape. Great quantities of garden mulch were brought in, to plant the exotics in. The wooden bridges were constructed on site, all to be wheelchair friendly.
The Garden Planting
The production of nectar was important all year round; the butterflies of course were fed additionally as well. Flowers cover a long season, bright colours for attraction as well as the framework of intrigue for the public.
An award-winning spectacle for children and adults alike to enjoy. Cascading, five-foot waterfalls, pools and streams. Weaving paths amongst the overhanging plants and the joy of a tropical scene. Butterflies, ducks and large koi fish all went to make up a wonderful experience in a moment of tropical time.
