A formal rose walk in Hertfordshire
“This traditional rose walk creates a grand entrance linking front and back garden beautifully.”
The garden design brief
This property enjoys a splendid view of the valley and needed a front garden design to create a formal grand entrance that leads from the front garden and drive to the back garden.
The approach
The owner’s passion for roses led to the creation of a run of wide archways providing the perfect place to enjoy a different rose colour and scent at every post. A simple run of bold arches plus a set of posts and ropes finished with delicate finials provides the perfect framework to train the climbing roses.
“A natural curved wall constructed with slate complements the rural surroundings”
“A formal Rose Walk lined with climbing roses and golden hops pleases all the senses”

The garden construction materials
The wide arches are made of curved wood which enables a smooth arch to be formed. The path is a beautiful Indian sandstone which leads to a cross shaped terrace. We chose to build a natural curved stone wall from slate to complement the rural surroundings and add form and structure to the route from drive to garden.
The planting scheme
We selected the stunning Golden Hop climber for its gorgeous flower form and fruit to accompany and complement the beautiful English climbing hybrid tea roses along the walk. The walkway leads to a traditional formal rose garden where shrub roses planted en masse are allowed to really show off their beauty. A low formal box hedge lines the rose walk and is set off beautifully with a shingle mulch.
The result
A formal grand entrance to a beautiful garden that has allowed the owners to indulge in their love of roses.
