A Portrait of a Garden Landscaper

During the past 20 years I had the good fortune to be my own boss working in the field that I love and have complete passion for.

I started out with just me and the dog Ella, doing small jobs such as fencing and turfing in the local area. Soon, clients were asking me to do more complex work and I rose to the challenge.

With the complete support from my artistic wife Deborah who, in the early days did artistic impressions of all the gardens, I had a firm foundation to build the landscape business on. It was soon thriving. And, I was fortunate to be one of the founding members of the Association of Professional Landscapers, which started in the mid 90’s, rising to Chairman status in 2001 - 2002.

The two-man team grew into four, and the projects became even more varied across a wider area. My interests in garden lighting and ponds developed and so did my confidence in building more naturalistic waterscapes and creative lighting.

Ella was also joined by three other wet nosed friends!

The projects grew, from the small suburban to larger country gardens giving me greater scope for my creativity and a need to increase the workforce which became two teams of three, plus office staff and a full time landscape designer.

Through out the years, I felt very privileged to have been able to go into someone else’s garden, wipe the slate clean, then start painting a new picture on a very large canvas. Every detail was important, from design, building, right through to the plants, which I consider are the very essence of a beautiful garden.

Due to economic pressure, I am currently working as head gardener in the Chilterns.
